PGA TOUR | John Deere Classic
Lucas Glover, who made the switch to a 2021 Titleist Pro V1 golf ball model earlier in the week, birdied five of his final seven holes Sunday at TPC Deere Run to claim his fourth PGA Tour victory, and first since 2011.
- Glover’s final-round 7-under 64 earned him a two-shot victory, topping a leaderboard that featured Titleist golf ball players in nine of the top 10 positions.
GLOVER 1-FOR-1 WITH 2021 PRO V1
- Glover made the switch to 2021 Pro V1 this week after working with Fordie Pitts, Titleist’s Golf Ball R&D Consultant on the PGA Tour, and Titleist Tour Rep Jim Curran at TPC Deere Run.
- Glover, who had been playing Pro V1x Left Dash since July 2019, tested both 2021 Pro V1 and Pro V1x models on Monday.
- According to Pitts, he liked the wedge spin and control he was seeing with 2021 Pro V1 and played the ball during his Tuesday practice round. “2021 Pro V1 gave Lucas the added spin he was looking for into the green, while still providing that tight, consistent flight he likes to see, especially in the wind,” Pitts said. “He was hitting all his numbers on the course Tuesday – in particular a 4-iron that flew 224 yards, which he said sealed the deal for him.”
- For the week, Glover finished 3rd in Strokes Gained: Approach (+7.095) and 4th in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (+10.211), while finishing 5th in Scrambling (81.25%) including a perfect 4-for-4 in sand saves.
CHAMPION PLAYS SCOTTY CAMERON SELECT SQUAREBACK 2
- Over the last two weeks, the John Deere Classic champion worked with Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Drew Page to dial in his Select Squareback 2 for an armlock putting stroke.
- “We took the same putter he had been using, built it for the armlock and added loft,” Page said. “He had a good week with it in Detroit but came to me this week looking to add a little more loft and move to a smaller grip for more feel. We watched video of it rolling and it was perfect.”
- The winner also played a U•500 utility iron and three Vokey Design wedges.
TITLEIST SWEEPS MAJOR EQUIPMENT COUNTS
- For the second time in two weeks, fourth time in seven weeks, and fifth time this year, Titleist was the top choice of players in golf ball, drivers, fairways (T1), hybrids, utility irons, irons, wedges and putters.
- It marked the 23rd time since the start of the 2019 calendar year that Titleist has topped every major equipment category at a PGA TOUR event, a feat that has never been matched by another brand.
MOMENTUM CONTINUES FOR LEBIODA, NEW TITLEIST IRONS
- Hank Lebioda – who has jumped 58 spots in the FedEx Cup Standings since putting the NEW T100 irons in play at the Travelers Championship – was one of 25 players who had NEW T-Series T100, T100•S, T200 irons and U-Series U•505 models in play at TPC Deere Run, up from 15 players last week in Detroit.
- Since putting the NEW T100 (5-9) irons in play three week ago in Hartford, Lebioda leads all players in relation to par (42 under), birdies-or-better (63) and scoring average (67.5).
- He’s registered his three best finishes of the season – T5 (Travelers), T4 (Rocket Mortgage) and T8 (John Deere) – while moving from No. 141 to No. 83 in the FedEx Cup race.
- “Hank had been looking for a little more control out of his irons and the new T100’s clicked right away for him,” said J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, Titleist’s Director of Players Promotions. “They go through the ground really well for him, allow him to control his distances, and you just see it in his stats the last few weeks on courses that require a lot of birdies. To be up there you’ve got to be hitting some quality iron shots.”
- “They feel great going through the turf,” Lebioda said, “the ball flight and ability to shape the ball is better.”
- Charles Howell III put a full set of NEW T100 (4-PW) irons in play. “He immediately loved the look and feel, just really liked how it went through the ground and how that could affect his ability to control his shot,” Van Wezenbeeck said.
EUROPEAN TOUR | abrdn Scottish Open
CHAMPION WINS WITH NEWLY-ADDED VOKEY WEDGES
- The winner of the abrdn Scottish Open played Vokey Design SM8 54.10S and 60T wedges sent to him only a few weeks ago by Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill.
- The Australian, who emerged from the three-way playoff to earn his second European Tour victory and qualify for the Open Championship, switched from competitive models after testing the new options he received from Dill.
- He finished the week fourth in Strokes Gained: Around the Green (+1.10).
WORLD NO. 23 ADDS NEW T100 IRONS
- The world’s 23rd ranked player, one of three players to make the playoff in Scotland, put NEW T-Series T100 4-5 irons in play for the first time this week following a trip to the new Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn in England.
- “His initial reaction was all about the feel,” said Titleist European Tour Rep Liam McDougall, “the way he could feel the ball on the face, and how that feeling related to control.”
JUSTIN THOMAS PUTS PHANTOM X 5 IN PLAY
- Justin Thomas put a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 tour prototype putter in play for the first time at the Scottish Open.
- JT’s new putter, which came about during a recent trip to the Scotty Cameron Putter Studio, combines the new Phantom X 5 head (offering a similar head shape to his previous Futura X5.5 model) with a prototype knuckle neck (similar to a Newport 2).
- “JT’s had incredible success the last five years with his Futura X5.5 gamer, but had been thinking lately about experimenting with a slightly different look,” said Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Drew Page. “We took the Phantom X 5 head shape he loves and gave it a Newport 2-style neck which he’s also used in the past. He tested it at a few different neck lengths and was able to find a setup that was giving him a more consistent stroke pattern with that little bit different visual and the same feel that he’s used to.”
KORN FERRY TOUR | TPC Colorado Championship
Playing a Pro V1 golf ball, Tag Ridings claimed his second KFT title – and first in 19 years – winning in dramatic fashion on the second hole of a playoff at TPC Colorado.
- To make the playoff, Ridings, 46, rolled in a 10-footer for par on 18 to finish off a closing 4-under 68.
- On the first playoff hole, after David Skinns rolled his Pro V1x in for birdie from 33 feet, Ridings matched him with a 13-footer.
- Ridings won with a par on the following hole, entering the winner’s circle for the first time in 6,895 days.
- For the week, Ridings finished T8 in driving accuracy (82%), hitting 46 of 56 fairways, and T3 in greens in regulation (79%), hitting 57 of 72 greens.
WINNER PLAYS TSi METALS, VOKEY WEDGES
The winner of the TPC Colorado Championship played a Titleist TSi 8.0° driver, TSi2 15.0° fairway metal and four Vokey Design wedges.
NEW TITLEIST IRONS IN PLAY ON KFT
- Twenty players had NEW T-Series T100, T100•S, T200 irons and U-Series U•505 utility irons in play in Colorado, including Tyson Alexander (T200 2-iron), Brandon Wu (T200 2-iron, T100S 4-iron, T100 5-9 irons), Lee Hodges (T100 46 irons), Cameron Young (T100 4-iron) and Peter Uihlein (T200 3-iron).
- From Brandon Wu: “I was super excited to put them in play this week. They look really clean, really professional. It has almost that raw feel, which you see on my wedges, and just that brushed metal look I really like. … A little bit thinner on the top line, too, which gives it a real clean look.”
PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS | U.S. Senior Open
The winner of the U.S. Senior Open earned his first senior major, playing a Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, TS3 9.5° driver, TS2 15.0° and 18.0° fairways and three Vokey Design wedges.
- He finished the four days at Omaha Country Club at 7-under 273 to win by three shots, becoming just the eighth player in history to win both U.S. Open (2003) and U.S. Senior Open titles.
- Titleist golf ball players have won 11 of the 12 events played this season on PGA TOUR Champions.
