DP WORLD TOUR/SUNSHINE TOUR | Joburg Open
Thriston Lawrence (Pro V1) claimed his first win on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour), posting a pair of 6-under 65s en route to a four-shot victory in the 36-hole event (shortened due to inclement weather and Covid-19 international travel restrictions).
- The South African made three eagles and eight birdies over the two rounds at Randpark GC in Johannesburg, while leading a 1-2-3-4 finish for Titleist golf ball players in the tournament co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour.
- Zander Lombard (Pro V1x) finished second, while Ashley Chesters (Pro V1) and Shaun Norris (Pro V1x) tied for fourth.
- With their finishes, Lawrence, Lombard and Chesters each earned exemptions into next year’s 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews. Norris was previously exempt.
- Said Lawrence, who earned a DP World Tour exemption until 2023: “It’s a life-changing moment for me. It’s a lifelong dream that has come true. Unbelievable golf these last few days. I had my card on the Sunshine Tour but I really wanted to move on to the next step. It happened so quickly. … You don’t get these opportunities often. I’ve had four years of co-sanctioned events so you build up experience but it’s just unbelievable. It’s been a goal, you want to see yourself up there but the last year and a half of Covid it’s been tough so you sort of see your dreams fade. For it to change this week is unbelievable.”
