One of the first things we learned about golf in Pittsburgh, PA is that flat lies are hard to come by.

The Steel City was built on the steep terrain surrounding the meeting point of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers (which join to then form the Ohio River). Pittsburgh is also known as the "City of Bridges" for the 446 bridges that span the numerous gorges and ravines that divide its hillsides.

Pittsburgh is so hilly, in fact, that the Pittsburgh Field Club has a fairly unique way of transporting golfers from the 17th green to the 18th tee -- an elevator. Installed in 1938, the elevator was incorporated into the layout after the tee box of the original par-4 closing hole was relocated uphill and No. 18 was converted to a 215-yard par-3.

Rising seven stories, the elevator spares golfers from what would be a daunting 75-foot climb otherwise.
