Team Titleist has wrapped up its prep work for the 121st U.S. Open, and the world’s best are dialed in, ready to tee off for the third major of the season.
Course conditions have created a lot of work for the Titleist tour truck on site at Torrey this week, with much of the focus being on TSi — both hybrids and fairway metals.
“The rough is really difficult this week and the greens are starting to firm up so we have a lot of players evaluating TSi fairway wood options,” Titleist Tour Rep JJ VanWeezenbeeck said. “The TSi2 21° 7-wood has been very popular. Players are liking what it does out of the rough and then into the greens. Having a really high launch angle and landing very softly has been very effective.”
This year’s U.S. Open also presents the players another unique circumstance given the PGA TOUR plays at Torrey Pines earlier in the year.
“A player like Max Homa,” VanWeezenbeeck said, “who’s a longtime U·500 user, really likes a 2-iron off the tee, but got to the San Diego during the Farmers and said ‘this is a golf course that really is advantageous if you can launch the ball higher.’ So the team put him in a TSi2 7-wood at 21° and it’s been in bag since.”
Adam Scott and Lanto Griffin, who added similar setups to their bags earlier in the year, are also gaming TSi2 21° 7-woods this week.
