AP2 714 new XP shaft

    Hello Titleist,


    Yesterday I have hit the new AP2 714 irons on a demo day with the XP95 shaft from TT.  I have seen there is a XP105 version also, will this one come available also (upcharge or standard?)?

    Kai - this is a great shaft and I have been playing it since I received my AP2 714's in November of 2014.

    I have the Project X in my 714 AP2's 5-PW (flatter, more boring trajectory) and the XP 95 in the 3-4 irons ... great shaft!  Gets the ball up quick and a great flight!

    I had no idea that the Tru Temper XP95 shaft could be an option on AP2 irons.

    I have a set of 712 AP2 irons (3-9) with Tru Temper Dynamic Gold shafts, stiff flex.  According to the "book", I have no business using such a heavy, let alone stiff flex, shaft.  But I chose the AP2 irons and the heavier stiff flex shafts to control my swing plane and flight path.  Last week, I demo'd a set of 714 AP1 irons at my club with Tru Temper XP95 shafts, regular flex.  The higher trajectory, combined with my swing speed, instantly gave me 15 to 20 more yards on my long irons, 10 to 12 more yards on my mid irons, and 5 to 8 more yards on my short irons.

    I am in no mood to take a hit by selling my AP2 irons for the AP1 irons.   Can I truly switch over to XP95 shafts on my 712 AP2 irons?  How will that affect swing weight?   Any other comments would be welcome.

    You should. There is also the TT XP105 as well as the XP95, and a Kuro Kage 85 g graphite option. You need to at least have a fitter work with a 914 AP2 head to try the shafts. This may be a closer test than the 714 AP1. The AP1 is 1 to 2 degrees stronger in loft than your AP2 (5I = 26/27, 9I 40/42). This may be an apple/oranges comparison with the loft differences with the results with the AP1. Your local shop will be able to quote you a price for Titleist or the shop to replace the shafts.

    Don, thanks for your reply.  I am a bit confused by a couple of your comments.

    When you say, "You should", is that encouragement to sell the 712 AP2s and buy a mixed set of 714 AP1/AP2 irons?

    Also, what is a 914 AP2 head?  I am only familiar with the 714 AP2s.

    Lastly, are you saying that it is not recommended to install the Tru Temper XP95 shafts on my 712 AP2 irons?

    You can replace your shafts. The XP95, as well as other shafts that are lighter and have a higher flight are options over the DG shafts you have now. You may not get the same results that you saw with the 714 AP1s which are a different loft than your 712 AP2, although it may be still an improvement. Since the replacement may easily run $50-75 a club installed, I would try the 95 in a 714 AP2 for a closer comparison. A good fitter may also recommend only replacing the shaft in the 4-5-6 irons as another option. If you only gained 3-5 yards in your AP2s from a shaft exchange - is that worth $300 for 5 clubs?
