What's more important spin rate or launch angle?

I just got fitted today for a 910 D3.  First I am a 14 handicap with a swing speed of about 95mph.  I thought I would go with a D2.  After several swings with the D2 on the monitor my fitter suggested I go with a D3 to reduce the spin.  One of the reasons for buying a new driver was I tend to have a lower ball fight.  During my fitting we were able get a shaft combination that got my spin rate down to right around 3,000.  However, we were never able to get enough loft to get my launch angle above 9  to 10 degrees on average.  The shaft I ended up with was a RIP 60 Stiff with a low kick point. At the end my ball flight was still lower than I wanted.   I never really discussed it with my fitter because I was so overwhelmed by information and I think he did the best he could with me.  I am a 14 handicap:)  So my question is should I have gotten a stiff shaft with a lower kick point to increase my launch angel or stick with lower ball flight and a lower spin rate?

    Thanks for any feedback!

Launch angle, back spin rate, and ball velocity, are the variables that make the distance.

Your ball velocity isn't going to be changed much by equipment, better impact and faster swing speed will increase ball velocity. Of course a driver fitted for you can help with impact. Otherwise consider velocity a constant.

For every velocity there is a optimum launch angle and spin rate. So lets make up some numbers, lets say 140mph, 14* launch angle, 3000rpm is optimal. If you launch lower than the 14* then the back spin rate needs to go up.

With a 10* launch, lower spin is not what you're looking for, you need more spin.

To increase your launch angle, the most effective way is to change how you swing......if you hit the ball straight then changing your swing probably isn't a good idea. You can get a lighter, weaker shaft, but you very well might start spraying the ball all over the place. A different driver head........you don't need to lose control or change you swing.

Maybe the 910 series just doesn't work for you. There's a good chance the 909Dcomp with a high launch could be your driver.

Taking a look at the overview of the 910 drivers, D2 seems like it would have been the driver to work with, higher launch and same spin......I believe I read on this board the D3 would be about 300rpm less than D2.

Quintin, thanks for the feedback and great explanation!  There is no going back now.  I already purchased the D3 and hit it on the range yesterday after my fitting.  When I was on the monitor my ball speed was around 140 mph with a smash factor of 1.5.  Once we went with RIP shaft I was averaging around 100 mph club head speed. I think it just felt better so I was a bit more aggressive at the bottom of my swing.   I think you are right about not changing my swing too much.  On a side note I was able to make it to the range today and messed around with my tee height.  I was able to tee it up higher and not change my swing.  The only change I made was to hover the club.  Anyway, the ball flight was great.  High but still penetrating.  I picked about 20 extra yard in carry and the ball seemed to role out much further.  So overall happy with the set up.  I think it will continue to give me room to grow as my swing continues to improve.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

Like I've always said....the sole of the driver is not made to touch the ground.....I always hover. I setup right where I want the club coming into the ball........my backswing starts down and back so I can swing up and thru.

I don't have problems with heel/toe hits, I have problems with too low or too high on the face, and I have just about eliminated too high.

definitely go with the the lower launch angle and lower spin.  With the new 910 drivers you can adjust the loft so then you can get more launch that way.  Also, playing in the wind, keeping the ball low is an advantage.  Definitely go with the lower spin low launch.

the higher lunch angle the more spin!
