I live in southern NY, and once April rolls around and my Tuesday night golf league starts, I put my clubs in the trunk of my car and that's where it lives, for the most part, until I stop playing later in the fall. Then I take it out and store in the garage where it averages 55 to 63 degrees for the winter.  Of course, I keep the NXT Tour golf balls that I play in my bag (and consequently, in my truck) throughout the summer as well.  I'm wondering, because of the heat, how much, if any, damage i'm doing to my golf balls by keeping them in my bag/trunk where it's probably reaching 100 degrees quite frequently for that 4 to 5 month period.  Knowing that the temps obviously cool down as the ambient temps go down outdoors, will the ball deteriorate and lose some of it's structural integrity, if you will, by being subjected to that type of environment?

    Thanks...

Since you live on the East Coast and not Boise, ID, you should worry about your clubs, as well.  Your trunk will be high humidity with no circulation.  You might want to keep the bag out of the car in your garage as much as possible.  You can cause some breaking of the adhesion of the resin gluing the shaft the head, especially if any are graphite.  While the humidity may not affect the balls as much, anytime your trunk is exposed to sunlight in the summer, it can hit 120-150 degrees inside.

I was able to sling an 8 iron head about 30 yards when it broke free (came unglued) from the shaft on July 4, 2012.  It was during the Women's Open at Kohler (as a volunteer, I got a deal to play the Irish course), was about 100 degrees, and no telling how hot the car got the previous 2 days sitting out in an expose parking lot with ambient temps over 100.

I can no longer be accused of club abuse by storing clubs/balls in a trunk.

I would be more worried about my golf clubs being left in the trunk than the balls.  It's not good for the epoxy holding the heads on to get that hot and then be used.  Sorry, but it's makes me cringe thinking your clubs are being left in the trunk and your worried about some 3 $ golf balls.  I would rethink the idea of leaving the clubs, bag and the balls in your trunk.  I wouldn't leave mine in overnight, let alone the heat of the hot summer days just baking in there.

Wow, i have to say that i never thought about that. I've always left my clubs in my trunk... I'll have rethink the way I treat my clubs during the summer months. I guess I always figured they could handle the heat. Thanks for enlightening me...

I've actually done some research/reading online and it seems that leaving golf clubs in the trunk of a car is not a problem.  There were a few ppl that had issues, but most leave them in their trunk all the time (as do I) and have never had any problems. Some ppl seem to think the grips may break down over time with extreme temps, but I have not seen that either. Most of the issues I read about were due from extreme cold as opposed to heat.  I do like always having my clubs with me just in case I want to stop at a range, or get invited to play an unplanned round.  I just wanted to pass this along to others reading the thread.

    thanks...

i do not believe myself that leaving clubs in the trunk effects the clubs performance however i do know even more so on chrome finish on the clubs will break down i have a set of my fathers that was left in the trunk for years in alabama
