Running Down The Soft Ball Myth

  1. Over the last few years, I have lost some clubhead speed and got trapped into the soft ball trap for the past several months with dire consequences to my game. I started playing two types of "softies" which were supposed to be for us older guys who could only push their driver to around 90 mph and still be reasonably sure of getting into the middle of the fairway. These softies were playable for the most part but they just killed me when I needed to score. The balls were nothing more than no-spin rubbery things around the green on chips and pitches and from 125 yds on in I had to resort to a lot of bump and run action instead of attacking the pin when the pins were tucked on ridges and on the corners of my greens. I gave up when I came to realize even further that these balls gave me absolutely no feedback of my irons. Good shot, bad shot, so-so shot. They all felt the same. I play here in Texas where wind is my constant enemy. This past week I went and got me a box of ProV1x balls. Back on track again!!!! Even though I am only swinging at 90 mph, the ProV1x is getting the job done for me. Feedback from my irons, a demon into this Texas wind, and when I try to stick it from 85 yds with my sandwedge, the ProV1x hangs on like a cat with it's claws out.

     Off to golf!!!!!

Amen.  The new NXT Tour and current Pro-V1x convinced me I didn't need to worry about driver speed to boom the ball - and worry about the siren songs of vendors with speed-rated balls.  Pretty sure a famous LH pro with a 64 wedge has a head speed close to mine with his lob shots.  At that point, I want his ball.  If I ever go with a softer ball, it will only be because of joint pain somewhere in my arms.

I with you on this. Same deal, old guy slower swing speed, etc. etc. played so-called 'soft balls' in the past. Some brands were better then other's. But they all lacked in the scoring area. I gave up on them.

Currently I'm playing the 2014 NXT Tour - great overall ball. It's longer, does run out a tad on approach shots and chips but not that bad. I live in the ATX area and we're always dealing with the wind, it's just a question of how much wind. What has really surprised me is the Distance I get off of the Driver and how the ball holds its line in the wind.

I had plan on trying the ProV1x, but after reading your post I'm now convinced I need to try them.
