My preferred ball is the ProV1x but I will occasionally play other brands of balls I have found. I usually play a ball until I lose it which in some cases my be 10 rounds or more. I am not getting any younger and wonder if my game would improve by playing new balls more frequently. I also play balls I fish out of the water hazards that look like they have not been in the drink for to long. When do you replace a ball ? You know a brand new ball will be at it's peak but it's performance has got to diminish with time. How many times can a ball be struck before it loses it's distance and spin quality?

    Hi Carl,

Thanks for the post. When it comes to shooting lower scores more consistently I always tell my friends that the one of the best first steps is always playing the same model golf ball. If you think about it, the golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on every shot during a round. So if you start changing models from round to round your changing every shot in your bag.

Also, performance and quality differences between golf ball brands are game-changing, especially around the green. Playing with the same golf ball model every round eliminates this performance variation and can help you hit more greens in regulation and hit the ball closer to the pin to convert more putts.

As for how long a golf ball will last, as long as you keep them in play you should be good to go.

    Hope this helps!

I too have wondered how long I should play a particular ball, especially if it develops a scuff or nick from coming in contact with something other than the lush fairway grass that we long for.  I hate teeing up a new ball and missing a fairway by 4 or 5 yds and having it land on a paved cart path.  I'm sure the scuff mark from that contact destroys the integrity of the dimple design, but by how much?  How much will be flight of the scuffed ball be affected?  Usually, if I'm striking the ball well at that time, I'll throw it in the shag bag.  But if I'm not playing all that well, I'll keep playing it.  The best round I ever played (70) was played with a used ball with a minor scuff on it.

10 rounds?  I don't try to upset the Gods of Golf by going as far as 2 full rounds without one offering.

I used to play the balls I found, but after awhile, I don't know what to expect with regards distance on a carry or a narrow fairway.  I save them and donate them to the First Tee.  Well, I do make exceptions for Pro-V/NTX Tour.  They find their way into my bag.

I do take the cart path/tree trunks scuffed balls out of play to save for the scary carries.

I don't know what the limit is, but many of the range balls I see are past whatever it is.
