  1. Titleist won't suggest which one of their ball's is best for a club head speed. When I ask they say try them all and chose the one thats best for you. I guess thats a fair answer, but they are marketing different types. Which one is best for my 98 mph driver speed?

Maybe you could look for a ball fitting event in your area, that would be a very good way to find out which is best for you.

Mark, i think their point is many different people like different things in golf balls. Some want max distance off the driver. Some low ball hitters are looking for high spin. Some want softer feel when chipping and putting. Some want better check up on irons to the greens. You have to experiment and find what suits you best.

As Titleist says, all balls have to perform at all speeds. Whether your driver speed is 90 or 105, you and Jordan Spieth need the same performance on a 35 mph pitch. My driver speed is 85, and the Pro-V1 out performs the Chrome Soft and RXS, regardless that they are marketed "to my swing speed" - for my game. The AVX amber visibility ball is finally one that I like when I can't follow a white ball on a gray sky. My choice was based on holding greens - many 2 piece balls just roll through the green on me. There will be a ball that meets your comfort level for performance and price. Driver speed is not a criteria.

Titleist has long done ball fitting from the greens back instead of from the tee forward. Makes a lot of sense when you consider where the majority of a typical round's strokes are played. Why maximize for the driver when it is used (hopefully) no more than 14 times during a round?

Take some time to determine which ball(s) best suit your game near the greens, then fine tune it to the other important shots in your game. Sure, I'd like to get 20 more yards off the tee, but it won't help me if I can't hit the ball near the hole on approaches and around the greens.

I've always been told to start at the green and go backwards. If you need the spin of a urethane ball then look at those first. If you need more distance and can live without as much spin then look at the surlyn covers. I don't know too many people who wouldn't be helped with the performance of a Pro V ball.

Matching your ball to clubhead speed is a holdover from many years ago. Today, it is recognised that every golfer has many swing speeds. In fact it is rare that you will hit more than one shot during a round at the same swing speed.

What is most important is how the ball feels and performs for you during a typical round. That is why everyone tells you to try them all and pick the one you like.

Each ball does have its own playing characteristics that make it different from the rest. Seek out your PGA Professional and talk about what you need the ball to do for you.
