  1. I'm surprised this subject is still one people discuss. I recall this being a topic of discussion back when you bought 90 or 100 compression balls, but that was a while ago. I agree with the article - there will be a much larger impact - at least for me - in reduced club head speed from being cold and wearing more cloths and the impact that has on ball striking.

I don't change balls in the winter.

I did not the comment in the article about balls losing some distance because of heat as well as cold. Years ago I would go to Palm Springs in July or August and never thought about the impact on the ball - except to be concerned they could melt on some days! :)

Glad to be able to read all the opinions here. If I can't play as much this time of year, I can at least enjoy reading about golf.
  2. It warms my heart to read that you diehards enjoy playing in the cold as much as I do. I reside in the Finger Lakes ( New York ) where winters mean alot of snow. This year we are experiencing a mild winter and as a result I have been taking advantage of it by getting in some bonus rounds. Nothing but green fairways and greens. I have been playing in Temps as low as 32 so I do lose some distance. I'm going to try the suggestion to use balls that are kept in the house at room temperature. We'll see if it improves my game in the cold so I become a scratch golfer when it gets hot. Thanks for the tip

  4. Put a pocket warmer in your pocket and switch balls every hole works great Pro V1 is the best ball no question

Interesting post Emily - I always wondered about the effect of temperature on ball flight. As for me, I always play a V1 or V1x, so it doesn’t really matter. I just might not play a new one every round in the winter.

  7. I definitely use a lower compression ball in the cold. We play winter golf when we can and temps are in the 30s. Really Like the DT Trusoft and Tour Speed for colder weather.

  10. I love the advice. I've been playing the Prov1X exclusively for the last two years as a way of eliminating one more variable. I'm a firm believer of finding a ball that fits your game and sticking with it.
  11. Usually play either a Pro-V or Taylor Made TP5, no matter the time of year. I always keep one in my pocket and rotate. Sometimes the TP's can spin too much (for me) on anything 150yds and in...even yesterday on shaggy greens. How do the AVX's perform in the cold for others? I've only played the AVX a few times, but always in the summer.
  12. I play the Pro V1 for the last couple of years, however just picked up a dozen of the Pro V1x to try out. My thinking was since I'm all bundled up and my swing speed is down the higher trajectory would help, also the Pro V1x has the most spin separation of the series the additional spin would help. I was pleased with the results so much that I'm thinking about switching to the V1x this season. I'm definitely getting a dozen when they hit the shelves

I switch up my golf balls in the winter time. I use the Prov1 during the winter time and a harder lower spinning golf ball during the summer months when it's hot. The firmer feeling golf ball doesnt fit my ear in the winter months. i dont really notice too much of a difference in terms of performance it's a feel issue with me.

I will say that in the fall in Michigan, it's time to put away the expensive balls cuz they always get lost in the leaves or I can't see them fly because of the angle of the sun and I'm not good enough to put it 300 yards down the middle every time!

Thanks for this review about cold weather golf and what ball to use. Simple - play the same ball year round in all conditions and adjust your game accordingly. We have lost the art of golf.....GPS, rangefinders, launch monitors have caused us to become mechanical. Technology has certainly helped us and I am not advocating against it, but sometimes you just need to adjust your swing and your strategy. Fairways and greens and warmer weather is on the way.
