What is the advantge of this setup and how does it compare to a 60 54 set up

Never cared for a 52* wedge, never used a 58.

If you were to use PW + 1 other, 58 might be better than 60.

I have a 50-08 (51-09), 54-11 (55-12) and 62-07 setup. I originally had a 60-07 and 64-07 but replaced both of them with a 62-07 (the shortcoming of the 60 is that it isn't good for soft sand and the 64-07 isn't good on tight lies; they both have good shots in their own right). The 62 has a wide flange so it works equally well on tight lies, soft lies, soft sand and hard sand. The 52-58 setup is ok only if the 52 has enough bounce for long bunker shots (a 50-08 bent to 52 would give 52-10). The 58 DOES simplify the need to choose between a lob wedge and a sand wedge. I was using a V Foil 50, Vokey 258-12 and Alien 64-05 and I found myself using the 58 for most of my short game. The V Foil had enough of a rounded bottom to work in sand but wasn't so good on tight lies.

    Tanner,

One of the biggest factors in making sure you have the right wedge mix in your set, is making sure that the gapping is consistent.  You want to be sure that you can cover all yardages from your PW through to your sand/lob wedge.  This being said, there is no standard to what wedge lofts you use in your bag, just make sure you can cover gaps of 10-15 yards between each wedge.  This will help to eliminate having to rely on any shorter finessed shots.  If you, for example, hit your PW 130 yards (full) make sure you can hit your gap wedge (50*,52*, or 54*) 115 yards (full).  As you get down to your sand wedge/lob wedge, you will need to determine how good of a wedge player you are, because you may need to add another wedge higher lofted then the 58*/60* if you don't feel comfortable hitting the 1/2 shots from close distance (ie. 50-60 yards).

    Hope this helps!

I'll agree with Quintin on a 52. I tried some(a Harmonized Gap, Vokey 252-08 and a RAC 52) and didn't really find any added value in them. On the other hand, I've tended to like a 51 deg gap with a bit more bounce (probably because old school PW were 50 deg). I had a Golfsmith P2 that was my go-to club for 80-90 yard shots. I also had a V Foil 50 that was great out of long bunkers but I didn't use it for other short game shots. The Vokey Spin Milled c-c 50-08 is rather versatile (especially since I set the loft to 51 - great on long bunker shots). For me, the 54-11 (bent to 55) is also a very versatile club. I can get out of soft sand, do long bunker shots in hard sand and at least about 75% of my shots <50 yd.

I am a bit different. My 710 (and soon to be 712)MB pitching wedge is 47°. I then go to a 52° (SM4 52-08) amd then to a 58° (SM4 58-09). I find the gaps work pretty weill for me and my go to club for greenside bunkers is the 58°. My yardages, using a normal full swing, are PW - 125, 52° - 110, and 58° - 85. The gap to the 58° is a bit large, but I don't find it unmanagable. I would suggest that you find a Certified Titleist fitter and get some help from a Professional with your wedge selection. It will really make a difference to get a professional opinion. Best of Luck!

I had a set of Golfsmith P2 irons in 2007 and used its PW (47), GW (51), a Vokey 258-12 and a couple different 64 deg wedges (Harmonized Trouble Wedge and Alien 64-05) for 2 years. The 58 was pretty much my short game but its only real short fall was longer bunker shots. For hard sand I used the 64.

My sand game was about average then but nowhere near like it is now. I got used to 47 and 55 as a PW-SW combo when I constructed my own irons in 2009 and used that until the beginning of this year (when I went to Eye 2 irons). My LW-XW combo for a year and a half was CG15 DSG 58 and 64 with a DIY 60-10; it was good but the limitations of the CG15s were tight lies so I replaced them and went to Vokey Spin Milled 60-07 and 64-07.

I briefly tried out a Spin Milled 58-12 cc this year, thinking it would do the same as my old 58 but I didn't like it so I returned it to the store. I'm pretty happy with my short game setup now. My 9 iron is 45 deg. I have 50-08 and 54-11 bent 1* weak (adds bounce) and 62-07 Spin-Milled cc.

It is pretty simple and no confusion on what to use. I have my distances pretty wired and have control down to an art. I primarily use my GW and SW within 60 yards and the 9 iron from 80-120.

A 50-60 yard shot, IMHO, is one of the easiest ones in Golf. That is an effortless pitch with a gap wedge, half swing pitch with a 9 or PW and right on the edge for a full pitch with a SW. A lot easier than hitting a full golf shot with a 62. If one wants to learn about distance control, check out www.pelzgolf.com (it talks about wedges but you can apply that to any club in the golf bag). You don't change your swing speed. You change the length of your backswing and how far you choke down the handle. The typical arm position is 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 for 1/4, 1/2 and full shots. Since I have a rather compact backswing, it is 7:00, 8:00, 9:00. The rule of thumb is 10 yards for every 1/2" of choke on a full swing, 5 yard per on a half swing and 2.5 yards per on a 1/4 swing. A full pitch with any club should be about 2/3 that of a full golf shot (I found this to be pretty close to accurate). Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in because I have been reading across the forums that people in general struggle with 50 yard pitch shots. The one thing that has been pretty consistent since 2006 is my short game and distances less than 135 yards to the pin (the rest of it may or may not go haywire on any given day).
