how do u get spin on a golf ball
Brent WSt George, UT
Clean grooves. Hit down on the ball. You will generally put backspin on a ball, That is what makes it go up. How much depends on various factors. Swing speed, Angle of attack, Softness of the ball.
Try hitting some Prov1's to a practice green with a pitching wedge from 75 yards and focus on hitting down and through the ball. Don't try to scoop it or help it get in the air. Once you get the rhythm down you should be able to tell when you are making good contact and spinning the ball nicely.
From there it's just a longer swing and a little more acceleration with the full shots.
And keep the left arm straight :) if your right handed.

ball compression.
if your talking about a wedge you put the ball in the back of your stance (not litteraly) just put it one more ball position further back.
keep the steep swing angle and hold the shaft angle leaning forward. keep your weight on your front foot. swing with confidence and accelerate the whole time. these are just some of the basic concepts.

If you can put backspin on a tennis ball, the extra credit suggestion is to open the club face, take the club a little outside and bring it a little inside to help the ball slide up the club face. You'll need to figure out how much "English" and the probable flight direction (some of the spin may cause it to tend to fade right)
...Warning, only if you can really control your swing. Learning to do this with your wedge and using it with your driver will put your $4 ProV1 up for resale the next time they clean up the rough on the right side.
