  1. what putter length "should" I use? I know the common answer would be, whatever I am comfortable with. But I am 6'4" (with shoes on)and my knuckle to floor is around 33.5 inches or so. Theoretically with those measurement I should use 36.5" putter. But a number of Tour Pros that are all 6'3" or taller use putters in the 35" area or even less. I'm not crouched over too much, but not totally upright. I like to have a rather neutral putting setup. I'm just wondering, anyone out there suggest making the putter 36.5" just because of my measurements? Or just leave it be at 35"? Because I generally haven't read of many players at all (excluding belly putters) that use putters over 35" on tour, regardless of height. Thoughts? Thank You

  2. Also, if I replace my current shaft, what size shaft do I need and what brand? (as in tip diameter size) .355? true temper step-less putter shaft? Thanks

That's tough to say, I guess the question I would ask is why do you feel the need to change? Do you have a predominant miss? Do you find yourself consistently missing one way or the other? Are you able to make clean, consistent contact in the center of the putter face? Have you been properly fitted before? The problem I have with players going to longer shafts (belly and broom-anchored excluded) is that it gets you more upright and moves your eyes inside the ball-line instead of over the ball and down the line, which leads to inconsistency in stroke, contact and seeing the "line". I've always been of the mindset to use a putter that gets your eyes over the ball while your setup and posture remain comfortable and consistent. If you can lengthen the putter and still remain in a proper and consistent setup position then I'd say go for it, just keep in mind that with length adjustment it sometimes requires a lie adjustment to get the putter sitting flat. I'm 6' 0" with golf shoes and my WRIST-TO-FLOOR measurement is 35 1/4". I have always played my putter length at 34 3/4" (for the last 30+ years)...

Scotty talks about path, toe flow and selecting length in his new "Art of putting" booklet.  Check it out at:  http://www.titleist.com/art-of-putting/
  5. Great point Cathi!

Also, I am 6'-5" and I use a putter that is about 36" long based upon trial and error of all sorts of different lengths...I have used as short as 33" with success however I found my back hurt often! LOL

What is right for you is not always best for another, thus, I would borrow a few putters of the same model or similar models that are anywhere from 33"-36" in length and visit the putting green to see what works best for you.  If you need an extra eye, ask your local PGA pro for checking your set up, alignment etc... with the different lengths to validate what you may be feeling is best.

    Good Luck!

  6. excellent. Thank you for the replies. I guess I was more so asking because someone (a pro) told me my putter was too short. I should be using a 36.5 inch putter or longer. And now it got into my head. So I figured I'd ask around and get some opinions. Thank You

I really believe when it comes to a putter, fitting only goes so far. It's important to have your eyes over the ball to look down the line of the putt, but beyond that putting is about the proper feel for you and confidence in the putter you use. If you're confident with your stick and swing freely and confident, more of them will fall.
