  1. Recently bought a set of Titleist AP1 irons and Vokey wedges (wee treat for my 50th). Until now I have always went Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 - PW, 52 and 56 degree wedges.

    Having been professionally fitted by a Titleist fitter at my local club and my new set up is;

    Driver, 4 - PW, AP1 GW, 50, 54 and 58 Vokey SM6's

This is the first time I have had such a big gap between driver and 4i and I was wondering if anyone else out there had the same problem and how they filled the gap. Feel as if I may have made an expensive mistake going so wedge heavy!!!

I would say a 3 wood has always caused me issues and at times I can go rounds avoiding using it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Cheers

    Jim

    I would suggest looking into the 816 H1 or 816 H2 Hybrids.

    The H1 comes in 17°, 19°, 21°, 23°, 25°, 27°
    The H2 comes in 19°, 21°, 23°, 25°

I would get fit for them from a Certified Titleist Fitter. They will close your gap. If you do go the route of a 917 F2 I would probably say a 16.5° would be your best option. Again, a Certified Titleist Fitter would best assist you with your setup.

Happy birthday and congrats on the new clubs. That's a great setup! I would say look into adding an 816 H1 hybrid to help fill the gap. It's a versatile club and very easy to hit. Love mine! Good luck!
  4. Put your "old" 5 wood back in there. I've got a gap between my 3 wood and 3 iron but I've never been in a situation where I've been in that area, yet. If I'm around 230-240 out on a par 5 or long par 3 I'm hosed.

    Jim,

Embrace the short game my friend! Dial in those wedges! The SM6's are awesome. Adjust your game to take advantage of a more precise short game and watch the low scored roll in!

I would say just go for one of the great hybrid options Titleist offers, I myself have the 19 degree 816 h2 and absolutely love it. Hope this helps you out, Hit em well.

It looks like you only have 13 clubs in the bag which would give you another club to add. I would add a hybrid. I play a 5-p iron setup and have 17 and 22 degree hybrids to close the gap between a 10.5 degree 910 D2 and my 5 iron. Since you play a 4 iron I would suggest hitting some of the new 816's and finding a loft that sits in the middle of your driver and 4 iron.

Have two Titleist certified fitters that I work with. Here is my current set up:

    915D2 10.5* Aldilia Black Rogue 70
    917f2 15* Aldilia Rogue MA*X 75
    816h1 17* Aldilia Black Rogue 80
816h1 21* Fijukura Speeder Motore HB 8.8 Tour Spec
    716 AP1s 5-W XP105 S300 shafts, + 1/2", -2*
    SM6 50.10* F grind, 56.14* F grind, XP105 S300 shafts, + 1/2", -2*

I find that the PW (43*), W (47*) and the two SM6s are plenty of wedges for me.
I also have a 55.09* wedge that I substitute when I play a course where the sand is heavier and more packed.

Correction: My SM6 56* is actually a 56.08*. Old age catching up with me. =)
  10. Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like the 816 H1 hybrid option may be a goer, which I was probably erring towards anyway just needed the extra nudge.

Many thanks again and good luck for coming season.

    I play driver (9.5*), 3 wood (15*), Hybrid (20.5*), 4-pw, 52*, 56*, 60*.
I find all my gaps are consistent and they fit my course to perfection.

I also have a 17.5* hybrid and 20* 3 iron depending on course and wind condition since flighting an hybrid is pretty hard.

    I play driver 10.5, 3 wood, 2 hybrid, 3 Hybrid 5-pw, 48, 54 & 58 degree SM5's. I personally more consistent with my Hybrids than I am with long irons.

    I stop carrying a 3 and 5, instead I carry a 4 wood, 3 and 4 hybrid, 5-AW AP1 714 irons, 54 and a 58 vokey SM5 wedges. My 4 wood is the 915f 16.5* it's easy to hit off the deck.
