Just don't chew it off with your teeth and you should be fine. Try a single edge razor blade and then clean up the tape residue with grip solvent or WD40.

Heat it slightly with heat gun, take a single edge razor blade to loosen the edge and pull it off.
  4. Warm to warmer water over the tape to soften the adhesive pull up an edge at a corner peeled it off , cleaning with any mild solvent or use an eraser ..

So just wondering, if i buy a house that was painted in the 50's I have to contact a HASMAT crew to take it off but it's okay to handle lead tape on all my irons?... Just the fact that this is on my mind may be proof of lead poisoning.

...You could be in trouble if you chewed on the lead tape you remove. The problem with lead paint is sanding (dust) or scraping (chips). Or if you use it to stir your Arnold Palmer (like lead solder in water pipes). Just don't rub the tape for good luck before every shot.

I'll guess there isn't enough lead tape being sold to get the attention of OSHA or EPA.

Between sweating copper pipes, packing cast iron joints with liquid lead and painting my parents house as a teenager in the 60's with white paint over asbestos shingles, I'm surprised I even know my SS number or home phone (ask slowly). Everything I learned to DIY before 1980 is banned today. Including breathing ethyl gas fumes while filling the tank on my merry Oldsmobile '68 Rocket V8.
