T-100 Irons with a T-400 5 Iron

    Hello,

    I am considering a new iron purchase with 4-PW of T-100 irons and then getting the 5 Iron T-400 which is actually 4 degrees lower lofted than the T-100 4 iron.

    My thought was that I would use the T-400 5 iron as basically a driving iron for some narrow par 4s.

    Any thoughts on this set up? I am a 7 handicap and hoping to drop that because the T-100 dispersion was so tight during club fitting. Thanks all.

    I wouldn't buy T100 irons as a 7 handicap. Unless you are hitting the DEAD CENTER of the club face every time, you won't see any improvements. High, low, toe and heel are all going to be 10 yards short of your intended distance. Trust me from experience as a reasonably accomplished golfer. They are not game improvement clubs by any stretch of the imagination, and now I know why nobody on tour is playing them.

    That said, if you are really set on them, why not just get a u500 4 iron? Would make more sense.

    With all due respect, the T100s are the number one iron model in play at the Farmers Open by a pretty healthy margin. I'm also a 10 handicap and they are my favorite set of irons I've ever played. 

    I think the important thing to keep in mind is there's a lot of subjectiveness when it comes to golf clubs. Hit everything out there and see what works best for you.

    List of players using them? I don't know of a single player on tour that uses T100s.

    Cameron Smith, Jordan Spieth, Byeong-hun An, Fabian Gomez, Lanto Griffin, Bill Haas, Russell Henley, CHIII, Sung-jae Im, Peter Malnati, Troy Merrit, John Huh, Scott Stalling and about a dozens others.

    Then Charlie Hoffman, Jimmy Walker, and sometimes Justin Thomas and about another dozen others use them in a long iron or two for a little more forgiveness at the top of their bag.

    "Subjective" doesn't reply to clubs that simply don't perform. T100 are junk and a waste of money. I can't even sell them for $500 at this point, because nobody wants them. Titleist botched the design, and managed to produce a club that's less forgiving than my old miz MP-14's.

    Apparently you're not a fan of the T100's as you've expressed in a couple of threads, and that's fine. I am a bit shocked that a player as skilled as you (14.5 GIR/round, better than any tour player) went through a professional fitting and selected "junk" clubs.

    I don't have a dog in this fight, and this forum is invaluable for "real world" discussion, but perhaps you could better communicate your dissatisfaction with the T100's and think twice before "calling out" one of the moderators - just my opinion.

    Allan, as a 10 handicap, how many greens are you hitting a round? Maybe 8 or 9? Doesn't sound like a great performing iron to me.

    Thanks. I tested a lot of clubs at a recent fitting and T100 was the best for me for distance control and dispersion. I found them to be pretty forgiving on miss hits too. T200 was great but some iron shots flew too far. I have a pretty fast swing speed so maybe that is why. The T200 max distance technology just isn’t for my swing as I need distance control for my irons more than anything.

    Turning from beltline and a few lessons go a long way toward center contact. I got fitted for my 718 AP2's by Aaron Dill at an event at TPI and I'm partial to them for that reason. If I was too change I'd want the T100S but at 67 T200 would seem more realistic. Thanks to you and Titleist for all you guys do to improve the game, hopefully people take notice.

    That said, if I were you i would snag a set of AP2 718. Easily the best non-blade forged iron that Titleist has made in the last 10 years. Workable, flightable, and consistent distances. I played a set of AP2's for years, decided to switch to T100 and suffered for 2 months before buying another set of AP2's.

    Conceptually, the T400 and the U-500/501 driving irons share a similar chassis. You might want to hold off on that club until you get your set, and see if a driving iron is a suitable addition. You can try to extrapolate comparing the T400 7 iron to your 4/5 irons to see how that compares using similar/same shafts.

    With the light 50 g shaft, the T400 is for an entirely different market than the T100. The T200/T300 four irons are also alternatives to the T100 3 iron. And both easier to hit and launch than the T100. The U-500 and T200 both have a forged face, the T300/T400 are cast.

    I agree with Allan - there is a log of subjectiveness in club selection. I was fortunate that my club fitter also understood that and I tried many combinations.

    Having said that, if I were in your position, I would consider the U500 in addition to the 5-iron. If you want a driving iron, why not get a club that is designed for that purpose?

    I carry a 6.9 index & I love my T100 irons. I play them 5-P with a TM-B 4 iron. Personally I don't think a T400 5 iron would blend that well for me, seems like too big of a jump for iron game. Currently thinking about changing out the 3 hybrid for the U510 2 iron.

    The club doesn't know your handicap and there are many different ways a guy could be a 7 handicap. If the dispersion and trajectory/feel/looks/distance line up to what you like then go for it. As far as the T400 (driving iron 5 iron) i think i would recommend the u500 3 iron instead or a TS hybrid either 19 or 21* - personally the T400 would such an anomaly it wouldn't fit the rest of the bag. I know JT put a T300 4 iron in the bag as a driving iron, but i would still prefer a similar profile to the rest of the bag.

    If your gapping works out with the combo you mentioned than by all means put it in play. The idea that a 7 handicap can’t play the t100 is nonsense. Easily one of the most forgiving forged clubs I’ve hit.

    First off - Congrats on the 7 handicap. I play to a 15.4 but have been anywhere from 13 to 19 for about 20 years, and if I demo'd any set that would improve my game, I'm all in. The T100's are one of the best looking irons ever by Titleist, and if you like the result, please proceed.
    Sounds like a good plan but you should demo the U500 or U510 too.

    I think the T100's would look good in my bag, but right now I am playing the 718 AP1 and they're my all time favorite. Recently during a round, I grabbed a buddy's T100 6 iron instead of walking back to my cart and without thinking about it, took a whack at 178 yards and stuck it right next to the flag. Not bad for an old man!!!
    Thought about the T300's but can't get over the Starship Enterprise look on the back. If I stick with my AP1's will my handicap drop to a 10, or should I be happy with the 15.4?

    Some players love the T100's and apparently some don't. That's why what Allan says rings true; hit everything you can before you decide to buy a set of irons.

    I had the T100 irons in my bag for a couple of rounds before I switched to my current irons. I loved them, but they were just not for me...
