Is it just me or does everyone else have problems with their golf game whenever they get a new pair of golf shoes? I seem to really struggle with my shots for a few weeks when wearing new shoes - everything from tops, lots of thins to high pulls. Do others have this problem? What's the best way to break in new golf golf shoes? Cheers Warren

I can relate. My biggest struggle came with my wedges. I would constantly hit them thin. I recently picked up a new set of FJ Contours. I spent several nights in the back yard walking in them, pitching and chipping back and forth. This not only helped break the shoes in, which really helped me to avoid the normal new shoes blister I get on my heals, but also allowed me to work through any swing/feel issues.

    Good luck.

    Hey Warren, great topic!
In my experience, it has been pretty much the same across the board whether I add a new pair of shoes in the rotation or if I choose to be in one of the 15 or so (all FootJoy) shoes. Primarily, I think the size or its fit, together with the socks style or thickness I chose to wear with them makes a difference in feel. For me, I like a certain feel and style that always fits perfect on my feet for the day's golf. Whether I'm pulling out an Icon or should I be in a DNA... DryJoys Cassual or Contour Casuals, it has to fit my moods & style for that day- like for instance, will I want to walk in Icon Blacks or should I be in M-Projects for this hilly course.
For the most part, my feet thanks me each time I've gone out in the variety of FootJoy shoes in my size.
I think making a good shoe selection, whether you choose to ride or walk for the type of course or kind of day (tournament or casual day) is ahead of you can prepare anyone for their most comfortable/confident day in golf.
One of the reasons FootJoy is #1 with me is because of their fine qualities- durability, and style and comfort. They are The#1shoeingolf each and every time. It's a great pairing with my likes and beliefs with all the Titleist products.

I can't say that I have this problem.

I do know a year or so ago FJ did a very large scale test to see if there was a difference between shoe models with a very large number of players. Although the results were not published, I do know that the data from my test showed no difference between shoe models.

If your new shoes fit properly, they should require no "break in". I routinely take a new pair of shoes from the box to the course and walk 18 in them.
  5. I believe it's the thickness of the shoes, it's changes your address height in relation to the ball, thinner sole closer to the ball, thicker your farther away, as they say it's a game of inches.
  6. I have discussed this with a few technicians at Foot Joy and they do make a few pair of shoes that have NO break in period...

You might want to try those next go round...

I break in golf shoes by practicing in them putting, chipping and having range sessions...them putting shoe trees in them between uses. I try to rotate shoes so I do not use them more than 2-3 times per week if I am playing/practicing frequently.

Just some random thoughts! Good Luck!!

Hi Warren - I have has a lot of success with FootJoy golf shoes right out of the box with no problems or break in. I have several pairs of the FootJoy Icons and I have always been able to pull them out of the box and walk 18 holes brand new with no issues (where I have had break-in issues with other shoes in the past). The fit is the same across my different pairs and I can switch between them with no impact to my golf game.
  8. I have the same issue and other times I feel less comfortable in certain shoes. I think it's all mental, personally. Try hitting up the range for a few buckets and get a feel for them before heading out for a round.

I know what your talking about from wearing new shoes. I've had the same problem in the past when I've bought new shoes and it messed up my game. What I do now is stick to the same make and brand of shoes because I noticed other brands have different heights to the heels and soles. So sticking to the same type kept my swing and game more consistent.

I don't struggle to break in new shoes game wise. I usually break out the newer shoes for an occasion and enjoy the opportunity to play more that the results. In terms of physically breaking in shoes, I just make sure they are really comfy when I buy them.

new shoes ( golf or not ) always need some break in time so I can imagine how they might effect your swing. personally I don't recall having this problem in the past. I will say, my current FJ hyper flex BOA is incredibly comfortable and I had zero break in. I love the way the pull your foot back towards the heel.

Although I have a couple of pairs of Dry Joys, I have four pairs of Icons, two of which are spike less. All of them were comfortable and needed no break in when I took them out of the box. I have noticed more about the socks I wear than the shoes. I have found that the FJ socks are far more comfortable on my feet than some of the other brands you can buy at the big box stores at a discount price. To answer your question I have not had any issues with my golf swing because of the shoes I am wearing that day. Any issues I have can be related to swing faults e.g., tempo, taking the club back too inside, not maintain my spine angle, etc., not the shoes I am wearing.

I have been wearing FootJoy shoes since I started playing golf in 1985. I traditionally order DryJoy tours and when I get them I can go straight to the course, take them out of the box and walk eighteen holes with no problems. I have a few other FJ styles and have no problems with fit, either. I have always worn a quality shoe and have been properly fitted for my shoes. A quality, well fitted shoe should not require a break in period, whether it be a golf shoe or a dress shoe.
