August 20, at my club, Rolling Hills CC in Wilton CT, # 3, playing 165 yards from white tees that day. Pin middle left. Was going to use my 165 club but my caddie, Isabella Hassan (who some weeks later would win our Women's Championship for the first time - aga 17), encouraged the 175 club, my 6 H.
I hit it very well, so well that one of my 3 playing partners said "it might be in", to which no one paid any attention. And after it landed we saw white on the green so no one thought anything of it. As we walked onto the green I noticed that only half the ball was was visible, and thought "how could it be plugged on this dry day"? As we got maybe 20 feet away we realized that the ball was lodged between the stick and the hole. As I was being congratulated, the ball dropped in. Over my shoulder is my friend Jerry Rosenberg, patiently waiting to putt after the photo was shot. He then sunk the 65 footer for birdy, losing the hole by only one. A fine golf day in my worst season.
