I am a young player in Southern California. I have a job and a career to support myself, but recently I have been playing golf quite well and have quite a bit of competitive experience as a junior player  (I opted out of playing in the Big Ten conference when I attended college). However, at this point I am considering making the jump to playing at a somewhat more competitive level in my spare time. I guess my question would be: should I concentrate on reaching a higher level of play in strictly Amateur events, or declare my status and try to play occasionally on a mini-tour? Obviously my goal isn't to necessarily make a career out of it, but to have fun playing at a consistently competitive level. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Playing the minitours is a little more expensive than say playing the Golf Channel Am Tour.  But...there's more bang for your buck...

Jonathan - thanks for your question. If your goal is to be a prominent mid amateur at the state or national level we would encourage you to play in as many local, state and national events which your vocational career allows.    Over the years there have been many college players who have gone into the business world and still be able to keep the competitive fire by playing in state or nationally ranked amateur events. Suggest that you review your state amateur golf association tournament schedule and the Scratch Players Amateur Rankings tournament schedule to identify tournaments which you could work into your playing schedule.

    Best of luck!
