Putting vs Driving

  1. I was listening to Jordan Spieth's news conference ahead of the Players and the question came up about Jordan's supposed "lack" of distance. Let me ask you guys, what would you take, the driving of Rory or the putting of Jordan? Personally, I would take the putting, I think sinking a crucial 15 footer is more in your face than a 300 yard drive.

  2. I too saw the news conference and enjoyed hearing his response to the question. For me I am taking Jordan's putting all day. Making close to everything inside 15 feet makes the game a whole lot easier. Good luck this season!

I would take Jordan's putting without a doubt. Not even a second thought.

I'd take the putting, you can be far & miss the fairway and still have a playable shot, but unless you make the putt it doesn't matter what the drive was like.
  7. Short game and putting are the most critical thing in golf. It's why guys like Jordan are always consistent day to day. The flat stick saves you way more than the big dog

    PUTTING!

I'd easily give up 20 yards off my driver if I could putt better!

Putting every single time!! Having a good short game is what makes the biggest difference in scores from my experience.
  11. Obviously putting

When your putter is hot it is a far easier game

For a pro they'll say putting, for an amateur they'll say putting but it should really be driving. Think of how many strokes you can shave off your game if you were in play off the tee either in bounds or out of bounds.

This is a good point and pretty much echoes my thought process.

Putting has proven to be the difference in who wins and who does not. The last hole of the Masters yesterday kinda proved that. Horrible drive by John Rahm, great cut shot for position, great wedge to the green and very awesome putt for a most unlikely putt. I will take under thirty putts all day long over long drivers and hit fairways.
Got to admit, that drive of his could have been worse, it could have gone into the woods, but with a four stroke lead, and 49 on his caddies vest, it was his day.

For me, it's all about putting. It's one of my favorite things to practice when not playing 18 holes.

  18. For sure the putting. For myself, I'm not the best putter but I can hit a good drive that keeps me in play enough.

Look at the PGA tour stats and compare strokes gained putting vs strokes gained driving…. Driving all day!!
  20. Putting for me.. but different for everyone. My local course is fairly short so normally end up hitting a lot of long irons

It certainly does not.. current leader strokes gained driving are: Scheffler, Cantlay, Kevin Yu, Hayden Buckley, Jonny Vegas, McIlroy, Mitchell, Hovland, Hatton.

Strokes gained putting leaders: maverick McNealy, Sam Ryder, Taylor Montgomery, Harry Hall, Ben Taylor, Anders Albertsons, Aaron Wise, Andrew Putman

  23. I would pick putting over the driving any day but not the putting of Speith.

When he is on fire its great but even then look at his most recent tournamnets and the great putts he holed then the more simple 2/3 or 4 foot putts he then missed.

When you look at the stats just now he is 76 on strokes gained.

Jason Day, Rahm, Homa and Sam Burns are all inside the top 15 just now. Looking st recent tournament results its easy to see the link between the strokes gained putting and success in tournaments, Rahm’s green jacket being the most recent and obvious
