Atmosphere at PGA Tour events

  1. A sure sign that the USGA needs to take a closer look at how it sets up the U.S. Open is when it draws comparisons with the Travelers Championship a week later. Only this has nothing to do with the scoring. What the Travelers Championship had was noise. It had atmosphere. “I mean, the ground was shaking it was so loud,” Spieth said. “What a tremendous last four holes, finishing holes, where you can get the crowd super involved with an amphitheater setting. If I were a fan, I would pick this tournament.” He also mentioned the Phoenix Open, and the list would have grown had he had more time to think, such as of Muirfield Village or TPC Sawgrass. Totally agree, Chris. I went to the 2016 Open at Oakmont (about 2 hours from my house), and I just listened to the ShackHouse podcast, and they were lamenting how far the crowd were away from the action. I not sure if TPC Scottsdale is good EVERY week, but there is no denying the crowd does make a difference. I would also say that Riviera has a nice setup on the finishing hole as well.

Crown noise is great but only if it is appropriate noise. Please no more "Mashed Potatoes" or "BabaBouies" are needed or wanted. Basically the only one entertained is the moron who does the shouting.

Each event is different. I don't think the US Open is the venue for noise and crowds on top of the players. There are plenty of weekly events for the masses to attend and cheer.

Having been at the most recent US Open, they could do a bit more to get you closer to the action. Some of it comes down to the terrain and topography of the location. One of the issues going against the US Open is that the event moves every year and isn't played at the same course each year. The Waste Management is a unique event that has embraced the "party" atmosphere with the stadium seating.

Good topic Chris. I thought the Travelers was one of the best environments I've seen on Tour in many years. I also like the Dell Match Play course, but the Match Play format limits the excitement on the final day.

This years US Open seemed to have far far fewer grandstands set up. That really eliminates some of the crowds on key holes. I know someone saod something about the topography there. But it's no worst than Whistling Straits and the PGA manages to get plenty of gramdstands out there.

But in any case. Hats off to Travlers for a fantastic tournament. Of course the finish didn't hurt either. Ha

The Tour should look at the new generation of golfers and cater towards them and the golfers of the future. One thing that is ridiculous - long pants. If the players want to wear shorts, what is the harm? Bottom line is that the Tour needs is to look ahead and figure out what will grow the next generation of golf fans.

I have to agree with ya there Todd about the pants. I don't understand why Tour players can't wear shorts.. Can't imagine wearing those during the brutal hot and humid days..

The ladies get to choose pants ,shorts or skirt. Never made sense to me why the men can't choose. Although it would be weird to see them in skirts. Snicker.
