New putter after almost 20 years?

    I'm likely a typical golfer on this site. I tend to chase the latest technology and will switch irons every couple years and drivers a bit more frequently. As I get older, I realize that I need all the help I can get. Now here's the issue....

    Since I bought my Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Newport 2 Mid-Slant (2000) no other putter has been in the bag. At Titleist days at my club, I don't even test other putters. Well on Saturday, things went horribly wrong, or right, depending on your perspective. Titleist was out in force to show off some new items and I was interested in getting fitted for a TS3 driver. That went well and will be ordering this week. What I didn't expect was the Scotty Cameron putters on display next to the beer stand, which was next to the putting green! Dammit! I was just standing there and decided to pick up the new version of the Newport 2. It was like night and day! It was so much heavier and felt more solid making contact with the ball I couldn't believe it. I quickly put it down and ran back to the beer!

    Now a couple days later I'm wondering if it's time to retire the old friend that has served me well for close to two decades in favor of the new flavor of the month.

    What say you? Stick with what works and I know better than any other club I've ever owned, or jump in bed (figuratively, of course) with the sexy new model?

    I recently retired my 2001 png Anser 2 in favour of a Newport. The Anser now resides on the wall in my games room.

    Sometimes it's better to retire it on a positive note, than it fall out of favour

    I agree with you wholeheartedly regarding general golf equipment and am willing to try anything that improves my game or holds back time and its winged chariot!!
    However, I have a slightly different putter philosophy. I have this inexplicable belief that there is a magic putter - not necessarily the same one for everyone, you understand, that would be ridiculous - but a putting Excaliber that would drain my putts from all over any green. I seek my magic putter everywhere. I wouldn't care if it were rusty or painted yellow... as long as it worked. I would no longer be a streaky putter.
    I can truly sympathise with you spotting a likely new addition - I'm waiting for the Phantoms to land in my local haunts so that I can pounce upon them... Can't help wondering if you'll weaken in the long run.

    I rock the Newport 2 select and I absolutely love it. It’s the best putter I have ever owned. I had 5 one putts last week in my 9 hole league last week. I think it has the purest role.

    If you are afraid to decide based on a subjective feel, you can always find a Cameron partner shop that will hook you up to a K-vest and provide you with enough data to land a moon shuttle to let you know your tendencies and which putter works closer to minimize off line putts. With putters, toe hang does make a difference. I like the concept of Excalibur. TW should nickname his 1999 SC Newport 2 that after winning 14 of 15 majors with it.

    I play early 2000s scotty's and refinish them and rotate them. Putter is all about confidence and aesthetics. Looks good usually plays good in my experience.

    Just because you buy the new putter doesn't mean you have to get rid of the old one. Most people who are into Cameron seem to have more than one and if nothing else your old one may increase in value. Win win.

    I say stick with the classic, especially if it has served you well over the years. Nothing like a classic Scotty in the bag. I would suggest if you are looking to spice things up a bit, maybe send it in to Scotty's custom shop for restoration and some personal touches. This way you get the best of both worlds. Your original putter, which will also feel and look brand new! I did this during the off-season and i am in love with how it came out. I posted some pictures in another thread, check it out.     From someone who traded in a name brand, mid-range price putter for a 10 dollars Titleist deadcenter from the 90s, it is all about your confidence with the putter, if you feel that the new Scotty's will give you the best chances of making those harder putts, go for it.
    I always mess around with the Scotties when I go to the golf store, and would love to add one to my bag someday, but for now, that deadcenter is treating me really well and it will stay.
    As for my old putter, it was not a Scotty, but I got a good amount for it on eBay.

    Michael Breed just posted an informative putter video this week that you may want to watch. He showcases some of his main points before purchasing a new putter. With an emphasis on getting fitted for it. He showed the "X" line from Scotty and explained some of the different shaft bends. He also points out how the alignment dots and stripes of different types enhance your ability to line up the putter face more easily on each putt. I found it on You Tube under his name.     I say buy the new one. Like someone else here mentioned, putting is about confidence and feel. Just take them both out on the practice green before each round. Whichever one you feeling is hitting the lines you’re seeing, play that one.

    Personally, I play a Newport 2 GSS. I love that putter and it’ll be with me forever. Occasionally I feel the urge to change it up. I’ve always been a big fan of the Newport 3 mid-mallet style putters. I bought one a few years ago and I put it in the bag when the Newport 2 isn’t rolling as I feel it should as sort of a “reset.” I switch back after a few weeks or maybe a season and come back to the Newport 2 refreshed.

    Go for the new putter. Retire the old one with good feelings, you can always bring it out for special occasions.

    I bought my Newport 2 about 7 years ago after using my Pro Platinum for I don’t know how many years. I’ve been looking at the 2018 Newport 2s and really close to pulling the trigger. I’m in the same dilemma. I say get the new one!!! I’ll follow

    Two years ago I had an similar experience
    Went for an full fitting and ended up getting an putter fitting also.
