I'm an old school golfer.  My 1 wood and 3 wood have a low trajectory, and therefore I get considerable roll with those clubs.   My 5 wood and 7 wood have a high trajectory, and typically don't get much roll.

I was recently told that a 10.5 degree driver is the way to go, but my 9.5 degree pretty much hits the ground and rolls only a few yards ... I am contemplating playing an 8.5 degree driver?

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Paul,

    Thanks for the question.

When looking for a driver it is most important to go with one that gives you the flight you like because you are the one who has to play with it.  With that being said, the higher lofted driver will give you more carry because of the increased launch and spin, while the lower lofted drivers will typically run out more.

One thing to keep in mind, roll out is more of a function of course conditions than launch conditions.  No matter how "flat" a ball flight it, if you are playing in softer conditions, it will not run out.  Carry distance is a constant.

In conclusion, find a driver that fits your eye, but don't give up too much carry for the sake of roll.

    Hope this helps,

    Bubba

Shafts make a huge difference, in addition to loft changes.  Using the same loft driver, you will definitely see a difference between the Bassara and the S+ and D+ shafts.  I was getting too much dropping straight with a high launching shaft but with a mid launch shaft even with a higher loft (adj. from 9.75 to 11.25), I'm getting a decent roll-out again.  Can't say enough about spending the time to get fit outdoors with a launch monitor and your eyes tracking how you are hitting with the various shafts/lofts.  Work with the fitter by going into it with an open mind to find a combination that can improve your game.

In my case, Prov-V1x and NXT Tour also land gentler than a lot of other balls and add to my roll-out.  All Titleist balls may be within 5 yards of each other on carry, but these 2 have more WOW factor when I see where they've stopped.

Good article on golfwrx similarly related to this.

Thank you Bubba, Don and Curtis.  I knew I would get some good ideas and info.  I was talking to a fitter and he basically said the same things.

I guess it's like finding the ball that is best for you, I am going to try a few rounds at each loft and see what happens.  The new equipment is wonderful, but sometimes it takes a little longer to find what is best for each of our games :)

i  think you would want to keep your woods high ball flight to land soft on greens. i recently got fitted for a 913 d2 and got a 12° d2! i hit the ball so low i needed something to get it up into the air. only time you have to watch it is when the wind is in the face. tee a little lower and slice into the wind but besides that i have found the 12° much easier to hit and been dead straight (except my last couple rounds, swing is out of whack right now with my new 714s) but i would keep the high woods and sit them softly on greens
