I've played when its 35 with calm conditions and 45 when its gusty. I strongly prefer the former! Motivation plays a big part in deciding to play, i.e. if there's a new toy in the bag I can't wait to try or a new swing thought that's "guaranteed" to work.... count me in.
  2. Wind is more critical than temp. 38 degrees and calm is better than 48 degrees sunny and windy.
  3. I live on a golf course in SC so I can afford to pick and choose the good days-those above 50 degrees.

We get some pretty nasty weather here in N.E. PA, but I'll play above 32 degrees. I usually drive about 45 min south and the temps are better. I don't like all the layers needed to be comfortable, but it's more about getting out to play and not too concerned about a score. In fact, with very few players on the course in cold weather, it's a good chance to throw down another ball and try different shots!

I was just stationed in Germany, beforehand I was stationed in Texas. So the weather change is drastic. But I have been learning how to deal with it. Today it was 30 and snowing. Last week I went out to the range when it was 35 with a slight breeze. If it falls below 35, don’t think I could handle it. :)

I agree with most of the posts wind plays the biggest role when temp's dip into the 40's. I have played many wonderful rounds with temp's in the 30's but there was little wind and plenty of sunshine.
  8. Wind chill is a better variable than temperature for this decision. I’m also more inclined to play in the Spring than during late Fall.
  9. My father always said, "There are too many nice days in So.Cal. to play when the weather is bad". I say, Not so! We had the first rains of the year 2 weeks ago and my Monday 4 stilled played in a steady rain all afternoon. We had a great time.
None of us had any real rain gear because we only get to play in the rain once or twice a year. We were soaked to the bone. Learned a neat trick that day. By the 5th or 6th hole, my gloves and grips were too wet to hang on too. If you take a cotton bandana, tear it in half, get it wet, wring it out and neatly wrap it around your grip, it gives you outstanding grip on the club even if it's a downpour. AND it's actually legal according to 14-3 ciii of the USGA rules. Look it up.
  10. Interesting results...living in the suburbs of Chicago the wind is more critical than the temperature. Any rounds we get to play after Thanksgiving are considered a bonus!

  11. I voted to not play under 40 degrees, but like many of the others it's all relative. For me I like to play rather early in the morning so if the temps are say 37-39 and the course is open with no frost when I start and the temps are going up to say 50 by noon, then I'll play. But if they start in the 30's and are forecast to stay in the 30's for most of the day then I'll stay home.

  12. Below 50 but sunny and no wind, sure. Below 50 with winds and/or clouds and I'm only out there if it's a special occasion (great course, good crew, etc)

I’ve played in the freezing rain when your ball picked up the ice while putting. But that was when I was working and only had weekends to play. Now that i’m Retired it needs to be in the upper 40’s with a good chance to warm to the 50’s during the round.

The key is the wind...if 40 & no wind I’ll play if wind is blowing/gusty I’m out...

I'm in South Florida so anything below 50 is pretty cold but playable. Below 40 and we don't go out. We have to many really good days to worry about one or two bad days. We have only canceled 6 times in the last 5 years due to weather conditions.
  16. If there is no snow it’s a go for golf! Not an issue since I live in SOCAL now but it was in Minnesota.

Massachusetts winters can be cold, but as long as there isn't any snow on the ground (or at least off most of it) some courses are open year round. Have played in the 10s. If it is sunny and low wind it isn't that bad (just stay out of the snow filled bunkers). And winter water hazards can be fun and add a new dimension to some holes: highest bounce for $10?. Like many, will escape for a couple of weeks of warmth- Myrtle, Southern Florida. But no matter, just keep playing and have fun.
  18. Here in the northern plains, it depends as much on the wind as anything else. Not that many calm days. If it drops below 50 and the wind is up that's no good. But if its calm (fat chance) then low 40s are ok. Snow storm this week so all of you who can play be extra grateful .

Play 12 months a year. There's really only two criteria for playing at my club. Number one is determined by the Superintendent. Will he permit play when conditions are not in the best interests of maintaining the course in acceptable condition. For example, ice or frost on greens shaded from a warming sun. Secondly, fairways overly saturated either from rain or melting snow.
My own measure is much simpler: can I get a tee into the ground without it breaking and/or is the wind velocity so great that walking is almost impossible.
Temperature is the last and least important measure. Roughly speaking, anything above freezing is doable, that's why they sell hand warmers.

If the owner of course lets me on the course I will play last year the last day I played Dec 27th when I came off the course after playing eighteen the temp in my car was 19 in Wisconsin if there is no snow there are always enough idiots to play golf, besides that the ball rolls along way when the ground is frozen. I worked out side most of my life so I guess I am a little more use to being cold. Like they say Titleist serious clubs for serious players.
