Holiday Golf Traditions

    I grew up in Wisconsin, so didn’t get too many golf traditions in the winter. I am interested to hear what some of your favorite (or maybe least favorite) traditions were growing up as they relate to golf. Feel free to share new traditions as well.

    Most years, if the course is open, there's no snow on the ground and the wind isn't blowing too hard, I play at least nine on Christmas Eve. I am usually playing solo since I don't know many others who can get away from their families that day. My wife is usually busy doing last-minute preparations anyway.

    I would play Christmas day if I could, particularly if my wife's family is visiting. I am always looking for an excuse to get out of the house once her little nieces and nephews all get together (oldest is 7). I can only handle so much screaming and yelling. I swear they all compete to see who can yell the loudest! The golf course would be a nice respite from it all. But, they close the course on Christmas. Can you believe that? How dare they! ;-)

    That sounds like a great tradition. Recent years I have been fortunate to play on Thanksgiving morning, but this year is a rainy day, so with the girlfriend’s family for football and turkey. Hopefully a mild winter will allow for Xmas golf. After this 2020, we deserve a mild Christmas!

    Play lots of golf during the holiday season. Sometimes in shorts and sometimes in long pants. Depends on what mother nature presents us with near the ocean in the Charleston, SC area. Only day course is closed is Christmas day. Employees need to be with their families.

    I love Charleston! Was stationed at the Aur Force Base from 1998-2001! Got married at White Point Gardens too! Head back to Hilton Head every other year for some beach and golf time! Usually do a day trip to either Charleston or Savannah. Love the Low Country!

    I grew up in Western NY and when my dad was alive, we ALWAYS played on Thanksgiving morning. Most of the the time, the weather was rough, but we always played. We’ve kept the tradition going since relocating to SC and most years we’ve had 8-10 family members playing. This year was unfortunately different with travel restrictions, etc. My son and I were a twosome, but we kept the tradition alive!!

    I love the idea of having a holiday golf tradition. Lived in Chicago most of my life so we try not to freeze during Christmas.

    Relocating to HHI in a couple of years and will definitely start a golf tradition then. Thanks for the good idea and discussion.
