There were no blues in Memphis for Team Titleist at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Putting on a ball striking clinic with their all-Titleist setups, Brand Ambassadors Will Zalatoris (9.39), Cameron Young (8.39) and Justin Thomas (8.30) finished the week ranking 1, 2 and 3 in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green.
Leading the trio, and the champion of the event, Will Zalatoris put his trust in a Pro V1, new TSR3 driver and more – carding the 6th straight PGA Tour win for Titleist golf ball players this season, the 4th for new TSR drivers in 8 weeks, and the 11th consecutive win for Vokey Design Wedges.
“When you play the best golf ball, you’re able to do what you want,” Zalatoris said of his Pro V1. “And so, off the tee it matches up with my high speed, playing the V as opposed to the X. X spins just a little too much for me, but the V just fits me perfectly."
This week in Memphis, Zalatoris gained nearly two strokes on the field (+1.815) with the combination of his Pro V1 and NEW TSR3 8.0 driver while averaging 321.2 yards off the tee.
Said Zalatoris of his new TSR driver: “I literally took my old shaft and plugged it into the new TSR, and I immediately saw results. The mishits for me were exponentially better. I mean, I was already seeing mishits go about seven, eight yards farther.”
Also gaming a full set of Titleist was Brand Ambassador Cameron Young, who currently sits at 13th in the FedEx Cup rankings. Young puts his trust in a Pro V1 Left Dot golf ball and new TSR3 driver amongst his full Titleist golf bag.
“The spin is just right for me,” said Young on his golf ball. “I was looking for just a little more and this one fit a really nice gap. It gives me the most control over my irons and helps me get a little more distance with the driver. I know that, especially into the wind and on windier days, the lower flighted shots I get really consistent performance.”
During his breakout rookie season, Young has five runner-up finishes, ranks second on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (+0.982), the top five for driving distance (318.6 yards), and 13th in Strokes Gained: Total (+1.419).
“I made the switch immediately,” said Young on his new TSR3 10° driver. “I loved it right off the bat, both the sound and feel. It felt like a hammer compared to the old one. It’s really rewarding for me to hit. When I hit it properly, I can keep a lot of spin off it and make it go pretty far.”
Justin Thomas became the latest player this past week at TPC Southwind to make the switch to a new TSR driver, trusting a TSR3 10°. During the first two rounds, Thomas led the field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and gained almost three shots (+2.999) on the field by the end of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
“It’s obviously an interesting time of year to make a driver change, heading into the playoffs, but after some really great testing early on with TSR3, JT was able to spend some more time with it after the Open Championship,” said J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, Titleist’s Director of Player Promotions.
Said Thomas, to PGATOUR.com, after his first competitive round with the new model in play: “The biggest difference is the spin. When I heel it, it doesn’t spin crazy high and when I toe it, it’s somehow spinning a little more. It’s unbelievable in terms of misses.”
Thomas also plays a Pro V1x golf ball, which he made the change to in December of 2020 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
“I feel like [the Pro V1x] is able to kind of pick up on some of the areas that I was trying to improve in terms of I was trying to get a little bit more height on the ball, trying to be able to hold greens a little bit better when they get firm or with long irons, and I feel like this ball has been able to do that for me,” said Thomas.
