Just back from Moortown having attended the SM10 day. Just another amazing opportunity from Titleist for us TT members.
My fitter was Phil Shaw, over from Ireland for the day. Really nice bloke and had a great time with him.
All the new toys were out and once I and Trackman had defrosted it was time to start the fitting. We chatted about my set up and how I see and play all the different shots required before starting to hit balls.
Current set up is T300 down to 48, then 52 /8 58/8.
Started out with full shots with 52 and 58 to see how I deliver the clubs for full shots. Very much a sweeper with no divot. The fitting app came back suggesting that I was in the correct grinds based on my delivery / course etc
As conversations progressed around what I use 48/52 and 58 for we decided to hit the T300 PW and 48 to then see whether a 48 SM10 would be a better fit and give me more flexibility as I only use the T300 48 for full shots.
The SM10 felt better, carried the same distance on full shots with more spin but also due to the looks and profile gave me much more confidence with the knock downs and for chip and runs. So 48 in the bag.
Then came the fun bit messing about with a series of shots in and around the green blind testing with random grinds. We settled on a 54 / 60 split and then it was a case of finding the right grinds.
The short game was behaving itself so it was clear what effect the different grinds had on my contact, flight and results. In the 54 the M grind was the clear winner, very consistent results on both short and longer chips and also when opening the face. I also tried the S grind but it was a lot more inconsistent.
The 60 was interesting as we played about with open faced chip shots and then bunker play trying the M / S and T grind.
I thought I would end up in M or T grind particularly after the performance with the 54 but the S grind was the clear winner both around the green and definitely out of the bunker.
The new wedges look really nice and one noticeable difference I felt from SM8/9 was that I couldn't tell what grind I had in my hands, all sat and looked very similar, where as in the previous versions I could.
The new Nickel finish looks stunning although I stayed with the tour chrome.
And with that an hour had flashed by. Final specs 48 F 54 M and 60 S and an awesome goodie bag.
Thanks again to Paul and Titleist.
