I just received my volunteer schedule for the 2023 US Women's Open at Pebble Beach GL. I'm assigned to the "Fan Services" area. This is the first time that Pebble Beach will host a US Women's Open. I'm looking forward to rooting for all the Titleist players in the field. If any TT members are attending (or volunteering), hopefully I'll see you out there.

  2. Should be a good championship

I think this is going to be an incredible location for a Womens US open. USGA has a lot of great sites on the list over the next few years. Im looking forward to watching some of it!

Agreed! When I saw it added a few years ago, I knew there would be a lot of excitement surrounding the tournament. I heard that the USGA received the most entries ever for a US Womens Open:

    Abdon:

Enjoy your time. It will be interesting to see how the USGA sets up the course compared to when the men played.

Can’t wait to hear about the experience in Scottsdale.

Thanks Tyler! Yeah, I had the same thought. The two big course defenses of a major Pebble Beach set up are the greens and the rough. I don't see any reason the USGA wouldn't have it set up like the Men's championship (other than length).
  7. Sounds like great fun!!

Should be a great championship and great for the spectator. It should be interesting to see how the USGA will handle course set up.

You will enjoy it, Abdon. Volunteered at the 75th Women's Open at Champions here in Dec 20 during the pandemic Even without the spectators it was a challenge and enlightening to work with the USGA folks and with the women playing in the event. I was a spotter one round and a tee "guide" (the one with the paddles at the tee) the second day. These women are really a lot longer than most think, and have terrific short games. We amateur men can learn a lot from them by paying attention.

I'm looking forward to it, Ted. I've attended a couple of the Men's US Opens when it was held at Pebble and it will be fun to see how the Women tackle the US Open setup.

I was a volunteer at the 1998 US Open at the Olympic Club. The USGA treats the volunteers well and you will have plenty of time to watch the golf. Shifts were 4 hours then you were free to be in yet on the course. It was a great experience. Have fun!

Agreed! I volunteered for the men's US Senior Open and I was lucky enough to be assigned to the players area which gave me an opportunity to meet the pros. Many of them were very appreciative of all the volunteers.
  13. Pretty certain it won't be set up like they do for the men

What differences are you expecting for the Women versus what the Men's setup would be?

I see three things that can make Pebble Beach GL a tough course and 1 of those things the USGA can't control. The size/speed of the greens, the rough and the weather.

My gut tells me about the setup for the Women's US Open will be remarkably similar to what the Men see (think Pinehurst N°2). This is a great discussion and I'm curious to read the thoughts of other TT members.

What the heck Captain Obvious? So they make it a few yards shorter. Everyone should play the tees where distances are proper for their length. Let's keep these threads under "Women's Golf" open to positive growth opportunities and dialog for the ladies. I for one love watching LPGA golf and never try to compare their games to men's professional golf. I just wish I could hit it half as good as most of them.

    Dale,

So true about hitting half as good as the women. They flush it, swing is never out of balance.

Pebble will play tough as always. The greens are small to begin with. USGA will pinch the fairways in a touch and try to bake the course out. Pebble plays how the weather goes, but it will be set up just like the men minus a few yards where even us posters in this thread that "break par" a lot would struggle to break 90 or 100.

These women are so good. It's going to be a great Championship.

Agree there is no reason to compare women’s golf to the men. No more than to compare the NBA to the women’s bb game.
At least watching the LPGA events, I may not see 340 yard bombs, but the game is more similar to the Champions tour than some might admit. There are a dozen or so of those men that can still hit 300+, but the majority are in the 260-280 range of the women. Their on course strategy relates to my game, especially on green approaches. From 150 yards or more, their shots aren’t going to drop and stop like with the regular PGA events. ….Neither do mine.
If I ever get to Pebble before I die, I won’t be getting to 18 in 2 shots from any tee box. Looking forward to how the women play it

This should have good entertainment value. I understand the greens at Pebble Beach aren't very large, so I'm guessing the hole locations won't differ greatly from those used in the men's Open, but I'm interested in whether the speed and firmness will be similar to the men's. I certainly don't have men's tour ball/club speed and thus not the height nor spin they create. Thus, I know my shots won't have the stopping power of men's tour players. While some of the women have serious ball speed, my thoughts are that most of the LPGA players won't have the ability to control the ball as well, especially out of the rough. And, I hope the rough is not men's US Open height so that they will have a chance to play more than pitch outs.

I don't see the speed of the greens being much different than what the men's setup. My tendency is to go back on how the USGA had Pinehurst N°2 setup back when they had the Men's and Women's US Open back-to-back.
