Attached is my “carry” bag of 11 clubs and “Sunday bag”. I have a couple old faves in my Sunday Bag (910F 21 fairway and 816H1 27 hybrid).

I’ve already streamlined my short iron and wedge setup as shown in the thumbnail. There are a couple golf courses where I could either use my TSR1 23 fairway or 910F 21 fairway (since they swing the same) and leave the rest of the fairways out.

My path forward on the unknown courses is to bend my 58-12D back to stock and the 60-04L to 58. I also have an SM6 60-12K bent to 58. My main sand/lob wedge is 58-06K

The attachment is what I call the "no brainer bag" The only difference between it and my thumbnail is the 50-12F being used as a PW. My thumbnail has 46-52 (46-10F and 54-10S) for PW and GW. "No brainer" because the Driver through 9 iron are "can't miss."

My 27H, 34H and 8 iron are “old faves”

I got some pristine 695MB heads arriving today. Going to build an 8 iron exactly like I have the 716MB set up (lie angle and length) but with an S200 shaft (the repair guy will put in a tip swing weight). The 9 iron will be a head swap with the T100S.

My thumbnail as of today is streamlined. Wedge setup will remain 46-52-58-64. My practice bag has all 58* lofts. The 2nd attachment show the result of the SM6 60-2K (58*). I trade off between the SM6 and WW 58-06K. The 58-12D and 60-06K together are for places like Torrey Pines (high-low bounce 58*).

Today's thumbnail is a result of a shootout between my 695MB 8 iron (38*) and T100S 9 iron (39*). What did the trick for the T100S was reshafting to Project X 5.5 and a standard shaft length of 36" and lie angle of 65*. Dead straight and actually got about a couple extra yards vs the 695MB. The 695MB 8 and 9 iron are now standard loft (38, 42) with shaft lengths of 36" and 35.75"; Keeping them for a 14 club bag and tightening the distance gap. The T100S 9 iron is 36" and the SM9 46-10F is 35.75". If I want to tighten up the top end, replace the TSR1 18 fairway with TSR2 15 fairway and TSR1 20 fairway.

The first attachment is what I played last Sunday. The 2nd attachment was where I had a "shootout" between an SM10 58-12D and a local vendor's custom forged 58/12 (with Callie grooves); the grooves may or may not be USGA legal but it still gives the Vokey a run for its money. The 3rd attachment is the 695MB 8 and 9 iron; will use those to "tighten things up". 4th attachment is the "magic 9 iron" (39* loft); the Project X 5.5 did the trick and it actually hits a couple yards farther than the MB 9 iron. For 14 clubs, replace the 18 fairway with TSR2 15 and TSR1 20, replace the T100S 9 iron with the 695MBs, and add either the SM10 58-12D or the Scripps 58/12.

It's not often when I don't carry a full bag. But the few times that I bring out the sunday bag, it's:
Driver, 5-wood, 3-hybrid, 6i, 8i, PW, 56 degree wedge and putter.

Side note: it's always good to practice hitting non-stock distances with various irons.

A couple Sunday Bags

What’s on my thumbnail is my dialed in bag. The 2nd Sunday bag will now have a 9 wood vice the TSR1 7 wood (I traded it in since there is very little difference between it and the 9 wood). It’s funny how things come around in the process of wedge upgrades. Over a year ago I was playing SM9 60-14K and 60-04T both 2* strong. I just acquired the SM10 60-14K (had it set to 58) and it performs better than 58-12D. I returned the 58-12D and obtained the SM10 60-04T. The attached is my spare clubs. Among the 3 wedges is a WW 60-06K and it works fine as a general purpose greenside bunker club. So does the SM6 60-12 (58*). I play the Scripps Golf 58/12 just for “fun”. I also have 695MB 8 and 9 iron to “tighten” things up; however, the T100S 9 iron (39*) gets the same distance as the MB 8 iron (38* same length). The bag with the 975J driver, Bullseye putter, 910F 7 wood, 816H1 27H plus the Apex 7,9,F and the SM6 60-12K is a mix of my Dad’s clubs and my old fave Titleists; it is a “challenge” bag.

12 clubs is all I need for “tournament golf”. The bag in the thumbnail approaches my 2013 set makeup of 13-19-24-28-34 for driver, fairways and hybrids, 46-54-58-64 for wedges. Lofts in the current bag are 13.5-19.5-24.5-28-34-39-46-53-58-64. In 2013 I was playing AP1 8-PW. Wedges were SM4 54-11M, 58-06L, 64-07T.


Played 695MB 7-P between 2020-2023. Since beginning of 2023, played 716CB 7 iron (32*) and 716MB 8 iron (39*) with SM9 48-10F (46*). Did a revamp of the bag in April (TSR1 20 and 23 fairways, TSR1 26H; TS2 27H swings better so I put an L shaft on the TSR1 and gave it to my granddaughter). I got the fairways and hybrids from the used bin and installed known working shafts (Diamana 70 x5ct on the fairways and Tensei 70 on the 27H). I found a Sumo2 SQ 34 with a stiff shaft on eBay and it is a no brainer vs a 7 iron.


Fred Couples carries a “senior bag” that includes 3-5-7 fairways and 4-5-6 hybrids (says “6 fairways” in his video on Instagram). Gary Player mentioned in “Playing Lessons from the Pros” that he would have won a couple more Masters with a 9 wood. Lee Trevino said “get ya a 6 wood” in 1972. Michelle Wie played 9 wood and 11 wood. Steve Stricker carried a 27H.

I can also play MB 8 iron, 46-10F, 54-58-64 wedges for 11 clubs.

This is my optimized playing bag. I can replace the 8 iron and Vokey 46 with a CB 9 iron. Also can pull tvd 58–12D. 11 clubs.
