After what I thought was a stubborn fever blister that would not heal. A biopsy proved to be Squamous Cell Carcinoma. I successfully had it removed and am well on my way to recovery.

Like others have said, the outdoor swimming pool and golf course used to be our daycare center during the summers and back then sunscreen and sunblock were hardly used. The residual effects speak for themselves.

I did find a brand called "Paula's Choice" that has SPF50 sunblock for lips and will be using this vigorously for the rest of my days.

I am attaching the before and after pics. UGH

Hope my testimony helps raise some eyebrows and remind you all of how serious this junk can be. TT4Life

I use Neutrogena Beach Defense 70. Here in FL, an absolute must. I spray it on in the driveway before I even get into the cart to drive up to the clubhouse and re-apply at the turn. I also see a Dermatologist once a year where he examines me from head to toe. I even apply when practicing.

I will be 76 next month. This is my 20th year of dealing with skin cancer. I have had 20 basal cell and 2 squamous cell carcinomas, all but 2 basal cell and one squamous cell, on my face. The majority on my nose, followed by the upper lip and then cheeks. All have been removed by a mohs surgeon and several wounds required closure by a plastic surgeon. In addition, I have had 230 pre-cancerous spots removed with liquid
    nitrogen.

I play golf, run, bike, and take long walks when I can't do the first three. It took me years, but, I wear pants, no shorts and long sleeve shirts (with SPF) and the Titleist Tour Aussie wide brim hat (with SPF). I apply Neutrogena Age Shield Face SPF 110 for these activities.

Every morning I apply CereVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30, even on cloudy days and when I drive my vehicle.

I hope my experience is helpful.

Good thread. I am heavily tattooed so it's long sleeve or sun block for me. I have swoosh pull up sleeves that have blockers in them you can get at any golf store, or I use the SPF 100 coppertone spray and keep in my bag. It helps you not get slippery hands vs the lotion method.

YES YES YES YES ,and sunglasses too. Don't need cataracts nor skin cancer. Easier to prevent then to cure/fix.

The brand isn't very important to me. Right now, i have a spray can of Banana Boat sun screen in the insulated drink pocket of my bag. I prefer the aerosol spray type because it's cleaner to apply and reapply. With the humidity here in Miami, even during what's winter months for everyone else, I have to reapply sun screen a couple times during an 18 hole round.

The weird thing is, the only skin cancers I've had to have removed were on my back, where a big deal scientific UV protecting shirt should have helped me.

Sadly, a lifetime of exposure contributes. Besides the actinic kerotosis spots I attack each winter on my face and arms, and a basal cell this year on my nose, I spent many summer nights as a child smelling of Noxzema (before we knew about aloe) used to sooth the sunburns on my torso. Tic-toc...

Sunscreen is a must. I apply a good base with Coppertone 50SPF spray before I leave home and reapply with 30SPF about every 5-6 holes. One thing I try to impress on my playing partners is even on the cloudiest of days, the UV rays are bad.

I use Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen (supergoop.com/.../everyday-sunscreen) and it is my absolute favorite. I have sensitive skin and am fair complected and it is the best I have found. You can also use your HSA/FSA account to buy sunscreen on their site. I use the 2.4 oz bottle and it is a perfect size and lasts me a long time!

I am not fair skinned, so I’m not prone to burning, but in the past I’ve used Blue Lizard. It’s more expensive and difficult to apply (it’s thick) but it’s waterproof and I believe it lasts all day. It’s not greasy either.

I've become a big fan of Skin Golfer's Sunscreen. Ordered my first tube this year, and I'll order more soon. Non-greasy, works great.

And it doesn't stain your clothes! Even better!

I'm not sure of the brand the Mrs. and the kids use. If I remember before I leave the house, I put them on my face and back of neck- legs sometimes. I like using a sun sleeves for my arm- FootJoy or Coolibar makes a good pair.

I am 72 and have been really lucky. Worked in the hay fields as a youth and we did not have sun screen and was not an issue back then. Have lived near the beaches most of my adult, three years on the Aegean Sea and thirty seven on the Atlantic Ocean. I see my dermatologist every year and I am blessed. I do wear a Titleist Aussie hat, but no sunscreen. They provide a lot of protection for my face, neck and ears. Bought all three colors last season.

I always just put it on the spots that were prone to burning, my nose, neck, and ears. But I heard some horror stories, (not just from you guys here, whom I hope and pray are all doing OK with some of your tales), and most of my friends were being checked. I went to the dermatologist to be checked after all these years. Got a clean bill of health but the recommendation from her was Banana Boat SPF 50. I enjoy reading from all of you so please use it, and get checked if something doesn't seem or look right.

embrace the bronze! but sunbum is a great brand, its waterproof so if you're sweating on the course, it doesn't get greasy or come off...plus it keeps your grips dry since it dries once its applied

I use Neutrogena SPF 70 spray every time out. I have at least 1 bottle in the bag and a few other backups. I try to apply every 6 holes on a public or resort course and every 9 holes at my home course that's private and moves pretty quick. I do it now because its healthy for you to avoid cancer, but it started in my college days at the lake all the time because I hated sunburns and we'd spend 10+ hours on the water.
  19. Good thread - Though you don't need screen with your waterproofs on!
Tried spray sunscreen but it went everywhere and made the floor slippery, so that was no good.
Now use UltraSun Factor 30 for legs & Factor 50 for face when abroad.
Use the same brand F20 & F30 here in the UK on the occasions when the rain stops.
Bit messy so put it on in the locker room before going out as you can then wash it off your hands.
I then overspray with Insect Repellent (Jungle Formula) to ward off the voracious insects, which seem to want to eat me.

To date, I've had six surgeries for different skin cancers. Living and growing up at the Jersey Shore in the 60s was pure hell on my skin. Who knew back then. I've worked at the same golf course for the last 24 years as well. More sun every day. No friend to my skin either. Please listen and use sun screen. It's never too late to start!!
